Coaching For Your Success

Coaching For Your Success

Coaching Page

People often look at coaches and mentors as one and the same. Many high school girls have told me their coaches are mentors and don’t see the difference. This includes all types of coaching in athletics, music, voice, dance, and riding. In fact while editing the chapter on mentor and coaches in Realizing A Vision, Your Toolkit For Success, one of our editorial team members didn’t see the difference. She considered all of her coaches as mentors. In some cases the coach will be a mentor just like a teacher or parent can be a mentor. However, are they coaching for your success?

Normally coaches and mentors are not one and the same. One main difference is that coaches are paid and mentors volunteer their time.  For example, a music coach for a future concert pianist may work for years with a student. That coach doesn’t volunteer his or her time. Payment is always part of the relationship.

How Coaching Helps You Become The Best Version Of  You

What if you’re meeting with a friend’s parent for an internship or part-time job? How will you prepare for it from what you wear, your etiquette and what you will talk about aside from the job? This is a perfect time to have a coach. Your coach will be unbiased and can teach you about what to wear that fits your style for different occasions and even help you pick out the outfits. Your coach needs to know the etiquette that is important for each type of interview, if a meal involved, or who else you will be meeting. It will take a special type of coach to work with your personality. It’s not a one day session. You’ll need time to practice, show your coach how you are doing, and often times get suggestions from her.

Your coach will help you make breakthroughs and get what you want with your your career and business. A coach will also help you with your own behavior and performance. Your coach needs to have knowledge about a particular skill to help you focus on learning opportunities and immediate problems.  In many cases your coach will help you identify your highest values and goals. Coaches will give you specific instructions or tactics to perfect a skill, solve performance challenges, or develop entrepreneur capabilities.

Your meetings with a coach will be in person one-on-one or a virtual meeting on Skype or Zoom.
